The Cardboard Box

The kids had the coolest toy this week: a cardboard box. Well, it wasn't really a box....it was an airplane, a jailhouse, a car, a train, a fort, and probably lots of other things that I didn't hear about. Along the way, of course, it needed a few modifications.

Yes, it was irritating to have dragged around the house. Yes, the sheer volume of cardboard made their room feel claustrophobic for 3 days. But, it's so much fun. It reminded me of a great, classic book: Christina Katerina and the Box. It's a super cute book that tells a story about a girl who had the very same experience (much to her mother's chagrin), in a really funny, entertaining narrative. If you or your kids have ever loved a cardboard box, then you'll love this book!

Over the winter a giant cardboard box doubled as a playground in our spare room. The kids cmade it into a slide and would play on it for a good hour before bed while I sat on the couch with a book or project, watching them wear themselves out. I miss the box.
That first pic is so sweet.

Ahhh, the cardboard box...the best toy for the imagination and 2 small boys. I remember the days of having fun boxes like that around 1984 or so. Next try large white styrofoam pieces. They make great bases for GI Joe men and jets.
What great times we all had as children in the pretend world... I want to go back there.

I just read Not a Box to three children this evening. It is a very fitting book for this post as well. Very simple and sweet.
